Westlife

 

Westlife are an Irish pop band that was formed on July 3, 1998. They were signed on by Simon Cowell and is currently managed by Louis Walsh. Over the years, Westlife's music has evolved from teen pop to an adult contemporary sound, with an emphasis on ballads. The group's original lineup comprised of Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, and Brian McFadden. Filan is recognized as the band's lead vocalist but Feehily and McFadden do share part of the lead vocals in certain songs. They described each of them with different vocal range and styles, Byrne (husky voice), Egan (rock), Feehily (R&B), Filan (pop), McFadden (pop, R&B). This variations in voices are considered by the band as one of their edge among other musical groups around. Some of the members can play musical instruments well, Egan (drums, guitar, piano), McFadden (guitar, piano), Feehily (tin whistle, piano). All of the band members are songwriters, although most of their hits have been composed by external songwriters. The group's musical influences include boy bands such as Boyzone, Take That, Backstreet Boys and Boyz II Men. on March 9, 2004, McFadden departed from the band to spend more time with his family and to work on solo projects. The remaining members remained in the band, which is now a quartet.

The band is considered to be the most successful pop group of the 21st century with more than 40 million sold records worldwide to date and placed 5th as the best selling artist of the 21st century in the UK just behind Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Dido, and Eminem. Westlife have currently 14 number one singles in the United Kingdom, the third-highest in UK history, tying with Cliff Richard and tailing behind Elvis Presley and The Beatles. They are the only act to have won the 'Best Irish Pop Act' award, a public voting category, at the annual Ireland Meteor Awards for eight consecutive years. They are also the only artist/group to win the ITV 'Record of the Year' award in the UK for four times. The band also broken a few top records, including: "Music artist with most consecutive number 1's in UK", "The only band who went straight to #1 with their first 7 singles", "Double-figures in shortest time", "Most entries at number 1 by a debuting act", "The group with most consecutive top 5 hits in UK", "Most number 1 singles from the same album", and "Biggest selling arena act in UK"
